In Maori mythology, the word wai means “water” in Maori. Water is an essential element in Maori society, not only because of its importance to daily life, but also because of its spiritual and cultural significance. Tangaroa, is the god of the ocean, father of fish and sea creatures, and he said “tiaki mai I ahau, maku ano koe e tiaki… if you take care of me, I will take care of you…”.
